Mindy's Art Club Announcement

Starting July 1st, 2018 I will begin my first art club!! A subscription based online class where I'll deliver content every month to keep you inspired and motivated to create. During my creative process, I always make discoveries and this is the perfect outlet for me to share those discoveries with you. We will mostly be working with water media but who knows where the process will lead and what awesome art supplies I'll stumble across. I'll have a "get started" supply list for you but as the months rock on, there may be new things that pop up. And when they do, I'll introduce those to you and give you direct links if you think you may like to work with them. I like to let folks know how they work and you can see them in action before you purchase.

We will be working quickly with water soluble materials such as watercolor pencils, watercolors, art blocks, and lots of other fun things. This class will help you to keep those creative hangries at bay! A daily practice is so important and I hope to give you a jumpstart into the fundamentals (as we begin) and other challenges and practices to keep you inspired!

Mindy's Art Club will begin July 1st and I will open up registration on that day.

You'll receive a fundamentals pack immediately upon sign up that includes: (this is a one time thing)
  • Basic Face
  • Face shapes for different ages

$19 per month!

Blurred Edges 2

Blurred Edges 2 is an exploration in the process of letting go. In this 2nd installment, we talk about micro and macro wedging. I show you how to control the wedging process so that you can explore further. Just because you can control the micro movements, we will still let go of "being in control" of the painting/drawing process.

We will surprise ourselves. Creating accidents. Fostering mistakes. For that is where the magic lies!
  • $45
  • Class begins June 25th, 2018 (self paced after that. sign up anytime)
  • 2.5 hours of video instruction
  • 5 lessons, 1 bonus
  • one FB live session to hang out, paint, and ask questions

Do I need to take the first Blurred Edges course to take this one? My advice is yes to take that one first. This builds on the first class but if you are eager to jump in then I certainly encourage you to do so!
Will we be doing the same lessons as the first Blurred Edges course? No, these lessons are brand new and different than the first class. This class is meant to take your further along in the process. All new lessons and materials! It is the same process but tweaked to taken you farther along the journey.
How long will I have access to the course? Lifetime access. Videos are downloadable
Do I need all the supplies on the supply list? No, I am all about using what you have on hand. I will be working mainly with Tim Holtz paints because they move nicely when activated by water. You can use any fluid acrylics that you may have on hand. (Ground espresso and tea dye Tim Holtz colors are the most important ones)
Will there be a Facebook group? The group will be continued from the first Blurred Edges class, so you can keep sharing there.

Meant to be - New Jack and Sally mermay painting

I am having so much fun with mermay this year. I had no idea of this challenge until I saw it going around instagram and at the last minute decided to jump in and create mermaids this month!

My mermaid that I've been working on the last few days is a Jack and Sally mermaid couple. After doing a Leia mermaid, my mind began swirling with ideas (and since I love jack and sally so much) I just had to paint them.

The original sold almost immediately after listing it...I think just a few minutes. But I do have prints and stickers available in the shop!

I also have a few more mermaids for sale as well:

New Watercolor draw and paint a girl

Watercolor is a swim in the metaphysics of life... a mirror of one's own character. Let it be unpredictable and colorful. (Anonymous)

I have a new Watercolor girl offering that includes a 9 page PDF with step-by-step instructions for how to draw and then watercolor a sweet girl. The PDF also includes a 36 minute video on this process. The curly headed girl above is the exact girl that I painted in the video.
We learn how to use color to bring depth and dimension in the face and why that works.

here are a few examples of the steps inside the pdf:

Supplies:
Color shaper size 6 soft flat chisel (optional) or Dina Wakley tools
Canson cold pressed paper: I used 4x6 size

Fairy GodMother!

We are just back from Florida and WDW and I just had to share my experience with the stunning Fairy GodMother...!! For some reason, I have always been nervous to meet characters that can speak back to you (i.e. not wearing a mask). So I never really met any of those. silly I know! But I just adore FGM and my dear friend Trista had gifted me these beautiful FGM ears and I knew that I must meet her. I told my husband I was so nervous but as soon as she opened up her arms and welcomed me with the best hug in the world, my nervousness fell away. I think that's what Fairy godmothers do, they make you feel like the prettiest, most loved person in the world. And she did! Here are some pics from my conversation.
And I just had to journal about it. I wanted to capture every word she said to me inside so I wouldn't forget!

I got 3 total hugs!!

Frilly Dancer - new class

Lately I have been going through a bit of a rut with my watercolors. It's just that I want more I suppose....I am so used to layering with acrylic paint that I was feeling a bit lost in my watercolor practice. I began to experiment with layering watercolors, gesso, chalk pastel, and ink sprays and what happened were these gorgeous organic shaped dancer girls. I love the flowing, frilly, organic shapes of the dress.
This expressive class will help you open up to the possibilities that come with watercoloring. I love to watercolor but I sometimes think something is missing. I want more layers and juicy textures and splatters. Let's expand those feelings and let go of the "right way" for watercolor. We will celebrate the delicious organic and flowing shape of the dress. We will not worry about perfection. I take you through the drawing phase all the way to then end talking you through each tiny movement.
Here is the class info at a glance:
  • 7 total videos: flower on kraft paper, frilly dancer girl, princess in a white gown on kraft paper, watercolor and chalk girl portrait, flower fairy princess
  • bonus lesson - Tiny Dancer
  • early registration through April 30th - $50
  • regular registration begins May 1st - $65
  • class begins May 7th
  • lessons post: Mon, Tues, Fri

I have been painting these sweet dancer girls and have felt a renewed outpouring of creative energy. I woke up this morning with these girls on my mind and I can't wait to get into the studio to play some more. I have this girl in progress. so far only using gesso (for texture) and sprays to enhance and meander into the crevices of those beautiful textures.

I have a smaller dancer in my shop. Her name is Frilly.

I have been loving experimenting with watercolor and then (once dry) chalk pastel with detail accents.

Watercolors are from Designs by Rachel Beth
and then tanager by Pfeifer art supply
and a gorgeous color from limn watercolors called Caput Mortuum (this color is absolutely gorgeous!! it granulates beautifully into the paper and is the brown color you see. I use it in the hair/eyes, and here I've painted around the little flowers. so gorgeous!)

Jumpstart into Self publishing

As I begin work on my next book, I find myself going back to my own online class to make sure I get everything right when designing my book to be sold on Amazon. I use Createspace, a company owned by Amazon to self publish my book. I love that it gives me and my work exposure through a huge company. This class has helped lots of folks create their own magical book....to make the book that is inside of them. And to make it the way YOU want it to look. I even get to name my own book. Yes, i've heard that when you go through a big publisher, you rarely get to name it what you want to name it.

If you have wanted to create a book, but don't want to wait around for a big house publisher to come knocking on your door.... then why not empower your own creativity with Jumpstart: into self publishing.
