Stay Curious

"When you are curious, fun has a way of showing up." - Curious George

Do you wonder what exactly to draw? Do you have problems choosing colors? (raising my hand over here!)

It seems when I play and experiment with my markers and pencils, I end up loving it more than when I "planned" to make something. What happens when these colors are layered? What happens when color does something unexpected? Or a shape of a piece of paper becomes a boat or a planter.

Why not stay curious and not "try" so hard...? that is when I create magic. I'll show you how to create color combinations as well as reveal what I have been doing to gather reference and information during the process of creating.

Come stay curious with me!!

NOTE: This class is limited to only 35 students to keep the class small for the zoom parties. I want to be able to attend to questions and it feel more like an intimate retreat experience. I may offer this up as a replay later on this fall. stay tuned!!

******PATREON members get first chance of the limited class of 35 people

If there are any spots left after I announce to Patreon, then I will open it up to everyone else here. Announcement will go out to Patrons tomorrow Wednesday, September 30th.

Class begins October 5th with 9 videos as well as 2 zoom sessions.

We will also learn how to draw holding hands:

and how to go about editing/fixing areas that aren't working:

Laughs in Flowers

The Earth Laughs in Flowers - Ralph Waldo Emerson

For the last couple of weeks, my focus for my art practice is to simply play and stay curious. These start out as simply playing with art supplies (mainly drawing stuff like Tombow markers and colored pencil). I activate the tombows after laying in some color with a water brush. Magic happens when I am not "trying to make something".

I have sort of developed a process now with these gathering reference photos, quotes, my favorite things, and things that inspire me.

At the moment, I am developing an online virtual retreat around these pieces. I will be announcing soon to my Patreon folks. This retreat will be really small with only 35 students to capture a more intimate retreat-like experience. (ps. if the class fills when I announce to Messy Inner Child Patreon patrons, I will most likely offer this as a self work later this fall)

The pic below is what we'll be created over 5 days and then we'll get together on zoom for the live/retreat portion.

Drawing, mental health, Patreon, and a new game

Rest until you feel like playing then play until you feel like resting, period. Never do anything else. - Martha Beck

wow, when I read these words...... these are the words I wish I'd wrote. They are so what I needed and what I now know my goals need to look like. Granted I feel like when she mentions play, it points directly to working your dream job. All I do is play. Play is what I am good at. And when I'm not playing in paint, I am playing in other ways. Theme parks. a new game (more on that in a sec). playing with poodles. and the list goes on.  just gotta remember to rest. don't worry, i am the nap queen.

“We won’t be distracted by comparison if we are captivated with purpose.” Bob Goff

After seeing all the stir for the animal crossings game, I decided to finally give in and get a Nintendo switch. My goal was to fill my "scrolling on instagram" time and turn it over to more play. I feel like my mental health has improved greatly. I still post my artwork....but the scroll time is basically gone.

Nintendo also has a Mario game that reminds me of the old school Nintendo Mario that I played back in the late 80's. Many more boards and so much creativity. Sure I could spend every waking hour drawing and painting but I felt there needed to be some balance and I use that off time instagram scrolling anyways so why not replace it with something fun?!?

Comparison and "what everyone else is doing" is another issue with my mental health. I simply don't have it when I'm out of the scrolling mode.

Well, my thoughts on Animal crossing is that I wasn't sure when I started that I was going to like it. I didn't know how the world worked and what I was supposed to do. But then, I made a fishing rod and off I went fishing. It is so satisfying catching a fish. No. not just one kind of fish like I thought they would have but at the moment I have caught 4 different kinds of fish. Then I was able to buy a wet suit. Now I go swimming and can explore much more of the island. Well I could talk about it on and on.

Well, I am off to be captivated with my purpose. To Play. happy playing to you!

Lots of content to keep you inspired!

Last note to mention is that I have to turn off commenting due to getting tons of spam comments on this blog. I am able to not publish and delete before anyone sees them but that takes daily energy that I'm choosing to let go. so my apologies about the comments.

Halloween costume art party!

Saturday night I hosted a fun Halloween live zoom art/costume party for my Happy Haunts class.

original sold, prints available!

We talked about spooky Stories and movies as well dreams. There was lots of laughing and me being an absolute dork! It was so wonderful to chat with these amazing ladies while painting this cute Minnie Mouse. As the night wore on, I realized I wanted her to have a bit of a Nightmare before Christmas type setting. I added the candy canes and trees in at the last minute....and the teeny wreath on the haunted house.

here are a few of the talented artists and what they created! I love how everyone added their own flair and creative juices.

Free Strawberry Shortcake Coloring page

Hey and happy Friday! Drawing has taken over my creative time lately. I'm not sure if it's from the day my back got out of sorts from over working or just the energy it takes to squeeze out endless colors of paint and blend before everything dries out. I tried painting with acrylics and for some reason, I was in a major funk. I didn't feel joy. However, I will say I stuck with it and painted for over an hour and finally started to feel my groove come back. I take a few days off from paint brushes and I get super rusty. And I swear that I can draw much better when I'm sitting on the couch. I can't tell you why. But it could be the way my paint table is set up for filming or just being more at ease with a poodle at my feet when I'm drawing on the couch. Thanks for reading this far with my ramblings....lol!

Today I have a cute Strawberry Shortcake and Blueberry Muffin coloring page for you to download HERE

I would love to see your pages. Be sure and tag me on instagram: @mindy_lacefield

I love an imperfect, line that skips just a bit and the tombow marker is excellent for this !
